Apple Cider Braised Red Cabbage

Perfect for fall cooking, this easy side dish is delicious and can easily feed a crowd. Add sausage to make it a one-pan meal.

  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 Granny Smith apples (or other tart variety link Pink Lady)
  • 1 small-medium red cabbage
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter or bacon drippings
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons Salvia Spice Blend
  • 1-3 T sugar (to taste)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 sausages (optional)


  • Thinly slice onion. Core apple and quarter, then cut into slices (no need to peel). Core cabbage and thinly slice.
  • Melt the butter in a saute pan with tall sides over medium heat. Add the onion, apple, cabbage, salt, and Salvia spice blend and cook until soft, 15-20 minutes.
  • Stir in sugar, apple cider vinegar, and water. Cover, turn heat to low, and simmer for another 15-20 minutes. If adding sausages, add during this step.
